Berlin (d.de) – US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to meet at a US military base in Alaska today. It is the first face-to-face talks between the two in six years and comes against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine.
Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz reaffirmed on X that Russia now had an opportunity to agree to a ceasefire and end all hostilities. “We expect President Putin to take President Trump’s offer of talks seriously and, after the meeting in Alaska, to enter into negotiations with Ukraine without preconditions,” said Merz adding that the aim of the meeting must be to agree on a summit that also included Ukrainian President Zelenskiy. “Ukraine needs rigorous security guarantees. Territorial issues can only be decided with the consent of the Ukrainians,” he stressed, speaking a day after a Ukraine summit with Zelenskiy in Berlin.
