Brazil sentenced former President Jair Bolsonaro to over 27 years in prison after being convicted of plotting a coup to remain in power after losing the 2022 election.
“If (U.S.) President (Donald) Trump were living in Brazil and had done what he did at the Capitol, he would be on trial here too, because here the law applies to everyone,” Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said.
The conviction ruling by a panel of five justices on Brazil’s Supreme Court made the 70-year-old leader the first former president in the country’s history to be convicted for attacking democracy.
