Momentum grows for global roadmap to phase out fossil fuels – DW – 11/18/2025

The U.S. subsidiary of Berlin-based Trench Group GmbH will invest more than $50 million over the next five years to build the facility.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Germany-based HSP broke ground Monday on its new U.S. headquarters and manufacturing plant in southwest Charlotte, marking the company’s first facility in the United States and bringing 74 jobs to the region.

The U.S. subsidiary of Berlin-based Trench Group GmbH will invest more than $50 million over the next five years to build the facility, which will produce bushings — a key component in high-voltage power transformers. Operations are expected to begin in early 2026.

“Through these investments, we are not only strengthening our presence in the North American market but also laying the foundation for sustainable growth and the further development of the energy infrastructure in the region,” CEO of Trench Group Dr. Bahadir Basdere previously said. “In doing so, we contribute to the stability and national security of the countries in North America.”

The plant will be located near Siemens Energy’s new advanced manufacturing facility. Jobs will include machinists, engineers and management positions, with an average wage of $77,315 — higher than the Charlotte-area average.

“Charlotte’s growing skilled workforce in key electric and engineering fields combined with its business-friendly climate offers HSP US the ideal environment as we expand our operations globally,” CEO of HSP US Dr. Nils von Dietman said when the announcement was made.

Local and state leaders celebrated the groundbreaking as a sign of Charlotte’s growing role as an energy hub.

“We are pleased to welcome HSP US to Charlotte,” Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles said when this was first announced. “This new high-tech facility further strengthens Charlotte’s status as a growing energy hub and will bring advanced manufacturing jobs to our city.”

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg area is home to more than 1,000 foreign-owned companies, with Germany leading in investment. German firms employ more than 19,000 people in the region.

This project was a collaborative effort among the city of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, Duke Energy and Central Piedmont Community College, which is working with HSP to create customized workforce training and apprenticeship programs.

HSP separated from Siemens Energy in 2024 to become a standalone company. Trench Group is a global leader in engineering and manufacturing components for high-voltage power transmission systems.
