Toulon (dpa) – Germany and France are aligning more closely on economic and security. At a meeting of the Council of Ministers in Toulon, the two administrations set aside the majority of their differences over the use of nuclear power. At a European level, they now aim to agree on equal treatment of low-emission energy sources, including nuclear power. Germany will no longer oppose France’s use of nuclear power through channels such as European regulations. In turn, Germany has been assured of France’s support with extending the hydrogen network into South-West Europe and closer integration of the electricity grid between the two countries.
The two governments also both pledged additional air defence support following Russia’s continued attacks. In a statement, the two governments announced that, in addition to considering increased military support, the would also explore tightening punitive measures as a means of exerting “maximum pressure” on Russia to end its war against Ukraine. They would work with the G7 and EU to achieve these goals, they said.
“The Franco-German motor is up and running once again,” said Federal Chancellor Merz after the meeting. “Keeping reality clearly in view and having the best commitment to shaping it: for me that is […] the spirit of Toulon.”
France’s President Macron expressed a similar view. “If France and Germany are resolved to proceed together, that changes the rhythm of Europe,” he said following their talks.
