BERLIN (AP) — A German man convicted of a high-profile 1996 kidnapping went on trial Tuesday over his alleged function in a string of armed robberies in Germany in 2018 and 2019.
Thomas Drach is charged with tried homicide, aggravated theft and arson, amongst different issues, within the trial on the Cologne state courtroom. He has denied the fees. There are not any formal pleas in German courtroom proceedings, and information company dpa reported that his lawyer mentioned Drach wouldn’t testify.
Drach, 61, is on trial together with a Dutch co-defendant over robberies of money transporters in Limburg, Frankfurt, and Cologne. Prosecutors allege that Drach fired at safety officers throughout two of the robberies, wounding two males.
Drach was convicted and sentenced to 14 1/2 years for extortionate kidnapping in 2001 for the kidnapping of cigarette inheritor Jan Philipp Reemtsma, who was held in a cellar for 33 days in 1996 till a multimillion-dollar ransom was paid. He was launched in October 2013 and arrested within the Netherlands final February over the money transporter robberies.
Drach escaped to South America in 1996, the place he lived underneath an assumed id. Argentine authorities arrested him in 1998 following data acquired through intercepted phone conversations and extradited him to Germany in 2000.
